Caries & Minimal Intervention Study ✓ Peer reviewed

In Vivo Comparison of Laser Fluorescence, Near-Infrared Transillumination, and Conventional Methods for Approximal Caries Detection.

Journal of clinical medicine · Bingül A, Bala O, Akgül S, Sarı C · 2026-09-16

Researchers compared five methods for detecting early approximal caries in posterior teeth: visual examination, bite-wing radiography, laser fluorescence, and two near-infrared transillumination systems. Bite-wing radiography performed best overall, while the laser fluorescence device showed high sensitivity but poor specificity, and the transillumination methods demonstrated moderate diagnostic accuracy.
