Researchers used mouse embryos to show that palatal shelves are naturally programmed to grow horizontally but are physically pushed downward by the tongue during normal development. When the tongue was absent or repositioned, palatal shelves grew normally, suggesting cleft palate in Pierre Robin sequence results from tongue obstruction preventing the release of elastic tension in the palate.
