Researchers showed that the Mediator complex protein Med23 in endothelial cells controls cranial bone formation through the HIF1α–VEGF pathway; mice lacking this protein in blood vessel cells developed facial bone defects that were reversed by blocking HIF1α and supplementing VEGF.
