Tobacco Control Policies and Tooth Loss: A Difference-in-Differences Study.

Journal of dental research · Baumeister SE, Chaffee BW, Holtfreter B, Listl S · 2026-10-23

Researchers examined whether state cigarette taxes, prices, and indoor smoking bans affected smoking rates and tooth loss among US adults between 1995–2012. Cigarette taxes and prices effectively reduced smoking and increased quitting, but showed no robust effect on tooth loss, while indoor smoking bans demonstrated no clear benefit for either outcome.
