The Role and Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Preventive Dentistry: A Scoping Review.

International dental journal · Yu OY, Zhang JS, Schwendicke F, Lam WY · 2026-07-18

A scoping review of 43 studies found that artificial intelligence applications in preventive dentistry span risk prediction for caries and periodontal disease, automated plaque and toothbrushing monitoring, and patient education through chatbots. AI tools achieved accuracy comparable to human experts in risk assessment and enabled personalised prevention strategies, though challenges include dataset standardisation, cost, training needs, and achieving sustained behaviour change.
