Perio & Hygiene Study ✓ Peer reviewed

Glutamate, its relation to periodontitis, diabetes and cognition before and after scaling and root planing.

European journal of oral sciences · Rama M, Ashish S N, Jagadish PBS · 2026-07-29

Researchers compared glutamate levels in saliva and blood across patients with periodontitis, Type 2 diabetes, both conditions, or neither, then assessed whether scaling and root planing altered glutamate levels and cognitive function. Scaling and root planing reduced glutamate levels and produced modest improvements in cognitive measures, though glutamate did not explain the relationship between periodontitis and cognition.
