Researchers compared two antimicrobial mouthwashes—octenidine and chlorhexidine—alongside placebo in patients with plaque-induced gingivitis following scaling and root planing. Both active rinses reduced inflammation, plaque and bacteria better than placebo, though chlorhexidine caused more tooth staining.
