Researchers compared mast cell counts in gingival tissue from three groups: healthy gums, plaque-induced enlargement, and orthodontic-induced enlargement. Orthodontic-induced enlargement showed significantly higher mast cell numbers than the other groups, suggesting mast cells may play an immunological role in this condition.
